Why the Lada Niva?

07:30 - Depart from Yerevan
An early start is essential - the route is packed, and it is best to be off the off-road section before dark. Driving unfamiliar mountain tracks at night is extremely dangerous

Smbataberd Fortress - the off-road start
One of the most formidable medieval fortresses in Armenia, perched on a mountain ridge. The road to it is already the Niva's first test. Panoramic views over the Yeghegis gorges open up from the very first metres of the climb

Tsakhats Kar Monastery (10th - 11th c.)
High in the mountains, far from tourist trails. Ancient architecture, stunning khachkars, and absolute silence. Tsakhats Kar is a perfect spot for a picnic and photography

Route to Spitakavor - via Vernashen this way only
Return to the main road and head towards the village of Vernashen. The short cut through Shativank is dangerous and not recommended

Spitakavor Church - the white - stone temple
A unique church built from smooth white tuff on a mountain slope. The great Armenian military leader Garegin Nzhdeh is buried near its walls

Proshaberd Fortress (13th c.) - the final stop
Little-known but strikingly atmospheric, the fortress sits above Spitakavor and its ruins literally blend into the rocky hillside. The final ascent is on foot. The reward: absolute silence and a panorama over the mountain ridges of Vayots Dzor

Important warnings
| Season: the route is passable only from May to September, and only in dry weather. In the shoulder seasons, the mountain roads of Vayots Dzor are closed by snow or impassable mud |

| Rain: driving during or immediately after rain is not recommended - wet clay and rock make mountain roads dangerous even for the Niva |
| |
| Route via Shativank: maps may suggest a short cut through Shativank Monastery - do not use it. The road has a critically difficult terrain profile. Travel only via Vernashen |

| Equipment: our vehicles are not fitted with a winch, shovel, or additional lighting - drive only in dry weather and during daylight hours |
| |
| Mobile signal: coverage is absent over a significant part of the route - let someone know your plans and download offline maps in advance (Maps.me or Yandex Maps) |

| Essential: let the Caravan Rent a Car team know about your trip before you leave - they will explain how to use the transfer case, low-range gearbox, and differential lock |

| Fuel and supplies: fill up before turning off the main road. Buy water, food, and everything you need for a mountain picnic - there are no shops on the off-road section |

Normal for the Niva: on rough rocky sections a faint smell of petrol may appear inside the cabin - this is a completely normal technical characteristic of the classic Niva and is no cause for concern

People: Despite the remoteness and difficulty of access, these locations are popular with both locals and tourists, so you are unlikely to find yourself completely alone here
